Did you know that Killara Kids is a SUNSMART centre?
SUNSMART is a Cancer Council initiative which looks at instilling healthy sun habits into Australia.
Their aim is to
“prevent and minimise the adverse effects of UV through effective skin cancer prevention and early detection initiatives, improving awareness of vitamin D and promoting a balanced approach to UV exposure.”
Why is this important?
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world! Two in three people who spend their life here develop some form of skin cancer. Most skin cancers are cause by UV radiation from the sun.
Children have sensitive skin, which places them at particular risk of sunburn and skin damage. In fact, exposure during the first 15 years of life can greatly increase the risk of developing skin cancer late in life. Most skin cancers can be prevented by reducing exposure to UV radiation.
Out of school Hours care services are a significant setting for promoting positive sun protection behaviour and have the potential to make an important contribution to reducing the lifetime risk of skin cancer in their care.
Why we chose the Cancer Council Sun Smart policy:
• This sun protection policy includes world leading SunSmart recommendations
• The Cancer council offer support in implementing our SunSmart policy
• Access to resources, posters, stickers, brochures etc
