Our goal is to support and nurture the children's and our own natural desire to be life-long learners. We are committed to the families we serve, providing support and encouragement. We believe every child deserves to learn, grow and develop through trust, nurturing relationships, diverse play and quality experiences in a caring community.

Our Values

Childhood: At Killara Kids we recognise childhood as a special time. A time for children to learn, grow and develop by exploring, playing, discovering, interacting and having FUN. We believe in the importance of imagination and creativity as a fundamental part of being a child.

Caring: Children in our care are treated with empathy, are nurtured and encouraged. We value honesty, kindness and respect. Respect to people, ourselves, resources and the land. At Killara Kids we promote accountability for children and educator's work, actions, relationships and interactions.

Community: Our families are an integral part of our service where the relationships built between children, families, educators and the wider community demonstrates our commitment in empowering children to be responsible and active members of our community. Our service works closely with Killara Public School, surrounding OSHC's/ childcare providers and local community organisations to build positive networks and working relationships.

Inclusion & Diversity: We respect and embrace diversity, difference and fairness. Killara Kids recognises and respects that each child, educator and family have their own values, beliefs, strengths and culture which contributes to our diverse community. Inclusion is an integral part of our service and program where we strive to embed inclusion practises to promote a sense of belonging for all KK children. Our service advocates and embraces the rights of all children to access Killara Kids.

The KK Culture: Our Educators are passionate, dedicated and committed to continuous improvement. We value the importance of building collaborative, supportive and positive teams. The culture that we have cultivated is reflective in the delivery of our high-quality program where we value the contributions our educators have made.

Reconciliation: Killara Kids recognises and respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First peoples of Australia and as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our services are offered. Our goal for reconciliation at Killara Kids is to engage with reconciliation on both a personal and professional level, creating an envrionment that support social justice, equality and equity. Through this, we are laying the foundations that value and recognise Aboriginal and Torress Strait Islander cultures and heritage as a proud part of a shared identity.

Our Philosophy

Killara Kids wishes to acknowledge the Traditional Owners , the Darramuragal and their country on which Killara Kids stands today. We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Elders past, present and emerging for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We acknowledge and respect their continuing culture and the contributions they make to the life of our community and Killara Kids both now and in the past.

Learning through play

We recognise the importance of play and providing children with choices and challenges where we have a flexible, free play approach which is supported by the 'My Time Our Place' Framework. Killara Kids implements a holistic approach to children's learning and development in which we endeavour to provide the necessary skills needed to grow, learn and thrive. We recognise the importance of a play-based curriculum and incorporate opportunities for independent spontaneous play. Children at Killara Kids have the right to relax, play and to participate in in a wide range of activities. Our program is child-centred and run, utilising the wide variety of physical spaces for play available at Killara Kids. We believe that play, through a developmentally responsive and interest-oriented program, allows children to build important social and cognitive skills and equips them to be active members of society.

Embracing Inclusivity and Celebrating Diversity

Killara Kids ensures all children, families & educators have equitable access to our program and feel as though they are represented throughout our service. We strive to reduce prejudice, facilitate social cohesion and celebrate differences in our daily practice. We celebrate, value and embrace the diversity of our children, families and wider community. Killara Kids provides a welcoming, positive, safe and caring environment where every family is valued. We acknowledge the uniqueness and diversity that each family brings to our service. All children, families & educators are given the opportunity to participate and experience an inclusive program, free from discrimination, creating an environment of support, collaboration and acknowledgement. At Killara Kids we promote, with guidance from local knowledge, a greater understanding and respect of our Australian Indigenous Culture and its ways of knowing and being. We foster connections between land, people and community to help enable children to become engaged, confident, and responsible individuals; encouraging them to meaningfully contribute to their community.

Respectful relationships, with children and families

We believe in using a holistic approach to programming and planning by collaborating with children, families, educators and the wider community. We respect our families’ knowledge and understanding of their child(ren) and look to support them in their roles as parents & caregivers. We continually strive to develop and maintain collaborative and open partnerships with families and invite their participating into all aspects of our programs, policies, procedures and events. We invite parents to help us meet the changing needs of our community, valuing their feedback and ideas as we strive for continual improvement. We respect that each child in our care is an individual and should be provided with the opportunity to have autonomy over their choices and actions. We recognise that each child may respond and interact within our program and environment in different and complex ways. Our Educators play an important role in developing trusting and secure relationships with our children. We provide them with a warm, safe environment that fosters their self-confidence and develops their social skills. By building respectful relationships with children, and through our collaborative programming, children are heard, acknowledged and understood. We acknowledge that children's voices are the most important part of our program for that reason all children are given opportunity to have input into the program with ideas and suggestions.

Providing a supportive and caring environment

At Killara Kids we advocate for children and their rights. We aim to support and develop each child's personalities and talents to the full. We ensure children have their voices heard, their opinions and suggestions implemented and that they feel they are able to express themselves in our safe, supportive and diverse environment. We create spaces that are warm, welcoming and supportive and allow children to feel safe and secure in their learning environment. Our natural and home-like environment facilitates a sense of comfort, stimulating children's wellbeing and development. Through access to our diverse spaces, we endeavour to promote environmental responsibility and sustainability by providing children with opportunities to respect and care for the land.

The Killara Kids Culture

At Killara Kids we hold dearly the wellbeing of our Educators. We recognise the importance of positive mental health and wellbeing. Our Educators play an invaluable role in delivering our mission, values and philosophy. We strive for a positive and welcoming organisational culture with a vision of continuous improvement. We foster a culture of professional development, personal growth and learning for our Educators which in turn provides a quality environment for children’s learning and development.
